On my last day off I took the time to fire up iTunes select the music section in the Appstore and go through the 175 pages on the hunt for interesting apps. My credit card now is a little angry with me but it was worth the stretch. One of the apps I dug up is a sweet little granular synthesizer with a neat xy touch interface and beatifull graphics. This synth is called curtis (after the man who wrote the first granular engine?) and is developped by the strange agency.

This will be a short review because I spent my last writing day rock fishing at the east coast ... but the fish refused to bite (is there an app for that?). But lets get to the point here, and this much can be said: this is so far one of the best examples of REALLY intuitive interface design. But let's start from the beginning: everyday looper is, well – a looper. But read on what's making it so special and why I am indulging in capital letters.

First question in my head after starting up JRHexatone: Why does everything in connection with prog rockers (Don't get me wrong here, I am actually a big fan of JR!) have to look overly complicated and come in colors that make you think to have choosen the wrong pill? Well, I don't have an answer to that but I somehow made my way through the eye candy and found some interesting functions. The smile on my face was permanent after downloading and installing bleep!BOX. The interface is straight forward, and if you have just a little experience with step sequencers you feel at home immediately. bleep!BOX is programed by David “Whitenoise” Wallin, who is no blanksheet in the digital audio world. He developed Jeskola Buzz tracker plugins from the first hour on and is developing innovative plugins for other DAWs as well. It feels good to see experienced coders like him move to mobile platforms. Let's see what he came up with so far.

Jasuto is a modular synthesizer for the Apple iPhone and VST hosts, programmed by Chris Wolfe. The cool thing about it is that it features a very cool and unique zoomable Open GL interface. To give you an idea think somewhere between Reactable and Jazzmutant Lemur. This allows extremely versatile patch creation and even more important, sound interaction. One of the programmers goals according to the website.
